A study of Ernest Friedrich August Rietschel's Bust of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. I'm slowly working my way through CG Talk's Anatomy Lesson Series which is basically where you try to do 50 studies from master drawings in a month of either the head or torso. It's taking me a lot longer than a month because I'm completely unfocused and I'm constantly drawing other things, but since I don't have a scanner, I can't really get those uploaded.
I am still without a tablet pen, so this entire thing was done in Photoshop with the mouse. I spent about two hours total on it. Critiques encouraged but I probably won't update it, my hand hurts too much. I see a few glaring errors but I'm satisfied with what I've accomplished tonight, overall.

"Each day I go to my studio full of joy; in the evening when obliged to stop because of darkness I can scarcely wait for the morning to come... if I cannot give myself to my dear painting I am miserable." - William Bouguereau
I wish I could see the source so I could better aid you in the critique.
As it stands, you can always go back to it later since your hand is tired, and rightfully so. Silly mouse.
The whites seem a bit too harsh to me so maybe dim those a bit, as well as create a softer background. The harsh black doesn't do much to enhance your bust.
The shadows are good but I'd like to see them smoothed a bit more and work a bit on the ear to shape it and make it solid, unless the hair is covering it.
Thank you! The hair is indeed covering the ear and I used a black background because the background of the original was black and I felt like it would help me more accurately achieve the same values.
I guess later I should define the ear to make it more distinguishable from the hair. Thanks!

DeviantART has partnered with FAIR to help promote equality through The Love Unites Shepard Fairey Equality Project. We're asking deviants to align themselves with this cause and have their work judged by Shepard Fairey himself!
For those who have many watchers, and for those who dont have many, it is hard to know how one retains that interest as well as receive more. This article explores the basics of watchers and how we react to certain situations. Although it does not affect some deviants, and the tips are generally related to common sense, we hope the article is a worthwhile read and that the majority learn something from reading this.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
